HYUNDAI 120 1,0T FLUID
+ Comfortable cabin and usable onboard tech - Fuel consumption higher than expected
There were two things we were most keen to glean from this particular long-term test. The first was how Hyundai's peppy new 1,0-litre engine would impact on the i20's range-topper having been a model that's historically powered by a lacklustre naturally aspirated engine; and, secondly, in this age of SUVs and crossovers, can a compact hatchback still function as a daily vehicle and is it practical enough for most situations?
As a compact car, interior space is at a premium and for families practicality is always a crucial characteristic. Behind the wheel, the i20 was certainly comfortable with a driver-oriented cockpit that's well laid out with the car's controls falling easily to hand. The multi-function steering wheel controls were intuitive to use and the manually adjustable driver's seat is comfortable enough, providing the required support despite being wrapped in obvious imitation leather.
The in-car infotainment system was a highlight with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto funtionality. Connecting via Bluetooth was a simple task and an effective voice-command vocabulary made for easy and safe operation while driving. It is a standard feature on this car, of which there is a fairly long list with other highlights including cruise control and a wireless charging pad for added convinence.
