Perkins Engines has been building high-speed diesel engines for more than 80 years. F. Perkins Limited’s (the firm’s original corporate name) first high-speed engine was a four-cylinder unit called the Vixen. Prior to the Vixen’s debut in 1932, diesels were known to be heavy, slow-revving, under-performing workhorses. This new oil-burner was initially developed to be on par with gas engines and used as a primary automotive powerplant. The next few years saw the evolution of larger-displacement, more powerful engines that were designed to fit customers’ needs. In 1935, Perkins used these advancements to become the first company to hold six automotive-diesel world speed records.
