Urban farmer Bjorn Low had to electrocute turkeys and wring chicken necks in agricultural school before starting his own biz. Even then, he can’t afford the produce he grows.
WHO IS HE? Bjorn Low, 36, founder of Edible Gardens, a company that cultivates farms in city spaces such as the rooftop of Wheelock Place and at Marina Bay Sands hotel. The farms supply vegetables and herbs to restaurants like Jamie’s Italian and eateries belonging to the Spa Esprit Group, including Open Farm Community. The father-of-two explains: “What we do is more than just farming. We’re driving a grow-your-own-food farming movement and teaching school kids and adults about gardening.”
Before becoming an urban farmer, I was in advertising… I worked at an ad agency here for three years and transferred to work in London in 2007. After two years there I realised that the corporate thing wasn’t very meaningful for me. I was just helping big companies make money. There was a lot of media attention back then in London on moving back to the countryside and picking up farming, so I got interested in that. Being able to grow your own food is an essential skill in life. You never know when you might need to fend for yourself. (Laughs)
