RAVI VARMA’S POPULARITY TODAY
According to the Limca Book of World Records, the most expensive saree in the world is a 15-pound saree priced at US$ 100,000 that pays tribute to the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. His paintings are still alive, and notably ones where he featured women, which have proved to be most in demand in auctions. In November 2016, auction house Pundole, sold Radha in the Moonlight for Rs 23 crore, the current standing record price for the artist. Raja Ravi Varma, Untitled (Tillottama), fetched US$795,000 (around Rs 5 crore) in the Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art auction in New York, in 2018. Sotheby’s also sold Varma’s Untitled (Damayanti) for US$1.2 million in March 2017.
THE WOMEN IN RAVI VARMA’S PAINTINGS
Varma turned to depictions of the Indian nayika (beautiful Indian woman), as she appeared in classical Indian poetry, and in the neo-classical Manipravala School of Malayalam. His models came from the matrilineal Nair community itself.
He devoted much time to studying the great Indian epics, the kavyas and dramas of Kalidasa and Bhavabhooty. He often engaged pundits to recite the texts so he could re-imagine the situations. This became a lifelong practice for him.
In 1893, Ravi Varma sent 10 paintings to the Colombian World Exposition in Chicago, under the title, Life of the Native People. The paintings showed women in traditional attire symbolising different regions of India. He won two gold medals there.
