He’s not known as one of the world’s most generous billionaires for nothing. In FY20, Azim Premji donated a jaw-dropping sum of Rs 7,904 crore towards Covid relief efforts— that’s Rs 22 crore a day! Of this, he pledged Rs 1,000 crore via the Azim Premji Foundation, Rs 100 crore from Wipro and Rs 25 crore via Wipro Enterprises. These donations were in addition to his foundation’s own relief work and Wipro’s efforts. Altogether, they made Premji one of the world’s biggest contributors towards Covid aid.
Tata Group
The Tata Group of companies has emerged a leader in India’s battle against the coronavirus. While the group has shelled out Rs 2,000 crore to mobilise resources to fight the spread of Covid, a number of companies under the Tata banner have taken proactive measures. Tata Steel, for instance, has redirected large amounts of industrial oxygen from its plants to alleviate the oxygen crisis in India. It has also imported 24 cryogenic containers to transport liquid oxygen. TCS has taken a slew of Covid care steps for its employees, including organising vaccination drives for them. And Vistara has facilitated the transportation of PPE kits and medical equipment across the country. Tata is also in talks with the government of Madhya Pradesh to set up an oxygen plant in the state.
