This is a pairing few people saw coming – but Katie Holmes and Justin Theroux have quietly started dating, according to sources – with a top-secret and intimate interlude at a quiet, tucked away New York restaurant.

And the first date was quite a success. ‘It was very romantic,’ the insider says of the intimate dinner. ‘Justin and Katie hit it offimmediately. It was pretty much the ultimate first date.’

Over candlelight, the duo spent four hours talking and getting cosy. ‘They were laughing a lot,’ says the source.

While the stars had already done some recon on each other, ‘they got to know each other really well’ on the night.
