When we met Jilly Cooper, queen of the posh bonkbuster, she was every bit as funny, cheeky and gossipy as her renowned racy page-turners. It was the summer of 2012 when the best-selling novelist and journalist welcomed OK! to her stunning Cotswolds home, asking, with a twinkle in her eye, “Darling, what’s the latest scandal?”
The writer, then 75, was working from her trusty typewriter Monica on her next book, Mount!, about the cut-throat, and of course sexy, world of flat racing.
“I never put any sex into the books to excite the readers,” she told us. “I just wanted to tell a story – and people go to bed with people. If you’re going to write about things, you don’t really need to stop at the bedroom door.”
Jilly famously described the notorious lead character of her raunchy Rutshire series Rupert Campbell-Black’s lovemaking as “like a power drill”, so we were intrigued to learn about her own taste in men.
