This year’s Love Island is in full swing, packed with pillowy lips, perky boobs and curvy butts – and it’s fuelling huge demand for cosmetic enhancements. The increase in patients wanting to book a treatment off the back of the show at our clinic alone is astonishing. Enquiries for everything from bottom lifts to breast implants have surged over the last month, with a record increase in demand for lip fillers and liposuction.
There’s no doubt that Love Island is a walking, talking advert for cosmetic treatments. In a recent episode, it transpired that all bar one of the women (Kaz Kamwi) had undergone Botox, lip fillers, breast implants or, in some cases, all three. By Harley Street prices, I calculated most of them might have splashed out over £200k during the last few years transforming their appearances.
The millennial mindset is clearly focused on looking their best on social media, and it’s little wonder that many of the Love Island girls wear their makeovers as a badge of honour. But the truth is, the show risks giving younger viewers an unrealistic picture of how they should look.
I’ve lost count of how many patients we’ve turned away who are not only too young but are demanding lip injections they do not need. Most are already beautiful with a full pout that needs no enhancement. In many cases injecting dermal fillers would only create deformity.
No two people have the same lips, face, boobs or butts so attempting to copy another person’s features – especially ones which are out of proportion – will look odd.
If all we see are plumped-up, line-free and pouty-lipped faces, then we start to see this as normal, and natural faces seem strange in comparison.
