At 45, Bollywood heartthrob Saif Ali Khan is in top form both physically and professionally. In a candid, exclusive interview with THE MAN, the Nawab explains his approach to work, living with his celebrity wife & the art of reinventing himself
Less than a minute after you meet Saif Ali Khan at a photo shoot in Mumbai, he confesses to being a bit tired after a day-long shoot. “All I want to do right now is to go home, shower and recharge a bit,” he says. Saif has come straight from the climax shoot of Rangoon where covered in blood and muck, he had to hang off a bridge. He in good spirits, nevertheless, and is charm personified as he shakes hands with the 12-member crew that surrounds him eagerly. Dressed casually in shorts and T-shirt, he talks in a soft lilt. His friends use the word ‘polished’ to describe Saif. You can see what they mean.
‘Relaxed’ is another term that applies to the handsome nawab. He's happy to not have to work tirelessly, and to have the opportunity to travel with his family. “I don’t like to work hectically. Some people enjoy the energy of doing multiple things. But am happy doing one film at a time and to be excited about it. Enough time to rest and go back refreshed.” With success comes confidence and the freedom to take a couple of months off and to be able to polish his French, practise guitar or learn gardening.
What keeps him busy currently is doing up his new pad, which he confesses is taking a bit too long and driving him crazy. Saif is looking into every detail of it right from the furniture to the cutlery. “Mum and I are also renovating Pataudi. I love the atmosphere in my home. I don't want to live in a designer home. It has to be a reflection of us. That takes time and care, but is exciting.” What also exciting right now for the actor is his upcoming period film Rangoon with Vishal Bhardwaj, set against the backdrop of World War II.
