Navy Day is celebrated on 4 December to commemorate India’s victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
DECEMBER 1971. India and Pakistan were on the brink of war. On 3 December, Pakistan struck the first blow with its air force bombing eleven Indian airfields. Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister then, declared war and ordered the Indian armed forces to prepare for a full scale assault.
The very next day, the Indian Navy moved into position in the Arabian Sea,stealthily inching closer to the Pakistani port of Karachi. Karachi was not only the headquarters of the Pakistani Navy but also the hub of the country’s maritime trade. So attacking it would cripple Pakistan’s economy.
