Roman Polanski, in full Roman Raymond Polanski, was born on August 18, 1933, in Paris, France. The French-Polish director, scriptwriter, and actor went on to become one of Hollywood’s greatest legends. Through a variety of genres, his films have explored themes of isolation, desire, and absurdity.
Polanski’s Chinatown (1974), starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston, garnered 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. It won for screenwriting.
In 2002, Polanski made the Holocaust drama The Pianist, starring Adrien Brody. The first film he had shot in Poland since knife in the Water, it won the Cannes Film Festival’s top honor, the Palme d’Or, in 2002, and the Academy Award for directing in 2003.
