Slashers are having a bit of a resurgence right now with Fear Street, Candyman and Halloween Kills, as well as Grady Hendrix’s The Final Girl Support Group. Stephen Graham Jones’s new novel is probably the most literary of the bunch but also the most nerdy, packed as it is with movie references.
In the hands of a lesser writer it could have felt like horror-hound grandstanding, but Jones’s hero Jade, a young woman who drowns herself in slashers to escape the realities of her world, is anything but a show-off.
Like Jones, Jane is a Blackfeet Native American, living on the scuzzy side of a lake which carries legends of an ancient curse. Jade dreams of her town becoming the scene of its own real-life slasher, and when she meets Letha Mondragon from the affluent new development across the lake, she believes she’s found her final girl. So when the bodies start to mount up, Jade thinks it’s her duty to get Letha battle-ready.
