IT’S time for all good citizens to stand up and be counted – or if you’ve registered on time online, to get comfy and be counted from your couch.

Census 2022, South Africa’s fourth census since 1994, kicked off recently and once complete will provide valuable insight into the state of SA and all her people.

“The census provides crucial information which gives an essential snapshot of the population,” explains Tom Moultrie, professor of demography at the University of Cape Town.

Here’s how it all works and how it will affect you.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

A census is the official survey of a country’s people and their circumstances.

Census information, collected by Statistics SA on behalf of the government, allows government departments, researchers and private organisations to better manage the economy and provide citizens with services.

Census questions include asking people what type of home they have, how many people live in it, their ages and gender, if they are homeowners, how they earn an income, and if they have access to services such as running water and electricity.
