We’re the first to admit there’s a pile of beauty bullsh*t to wade through before you get to the really good stuff. Here, we sniff out 2018’s biggest trends (and turkeys)
Cannabis creams
SAY WHAT?
Hemp without the high is being hailed as the answer to inflamed, acne-prone skin. Rollies not required.
BUZZ Turns out Bob Marley may have been a budding beauty guru. Cannabis produces a compound called cannabidiol (CBD) that possesses antiseptic and antibiotic properties, and the bit (legally) blowing our mind is that our bodies produce similar cannabinoids. Basically, these creams work in harmony with our skin and are capable of keeping it in a state of calm. Hemp oil derived from cannabis still has some of the same benefits, but for marijuana’s soothing and anti-inflammatory magic, it’s the CBD you need (try the Love Hemp and Lord Jones ranges). Don’t worry, though, you won’t space out when you slap them on, as they don’t contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the part that triggers those psychedelic side effects.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT? Find your fix in Carun Face Cream (£16.99), Lord Jones Pain & Wellness Pure CBD Body Lotion (£36.95) and Earthly Bodies Hemp Seed Oil Soap (£3.50).
Baking soda
SAY WHAT? Sure, it’s excellent at making glorious Yorkshire puds, but is scrubbing your skin with this store-cupboard essential set to be a thing?
BUZZ See that fence? There’s probably a pile of baking soda sitting on top of it, because if there was ever an ingredient to divide opinion among beauty scholars, this is it. While some pros believe in its pore-unplugging abilities and praise its natural origins (in comparison to chemical exfoliants), others shudder at the thought of it. “It makes skin more alkaline and disrupts the skin’s barrier,” explains aesthetic doctor Dr Maryam Zamani. Which means you’re more prone to inflammation, spots and sensitivity.
