Women In Robes

It is so empowering to be a woman on a responsible position like that of being a judge. After all they have the power and expertise to decide on what is right and what is wrong. Their profession lends them a sense of fulfillment and even their staff ends up addressing these women in power as ‘Sir’. Well, it is their own version of Dangal.

They preside over meetings, sitting up on the Dias, solving land and panchayat disputes besides addressing family issues. Sometimes they hold Lok Adalats too. These women definitely inspire men to go back home and send their daughters to law schools. We get talking to three women judges and scrape at the woman behind the no-nonsense judges that they are in their respective court rooms.

Anudeep Kaur Bhatti,

Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Secretary, District Legal Services Authority. Her work is essentially hearing civil and criminal disputes. Presently she is on deputation with the Haryana legal Services Authority. She also organizes Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

Asmita Deswal is posted as Judicial Magistrate 1st Class at Gurgaon. Asmita got selected to Haryana Judicial services in 2013.

What is your personal style statement?

Anudeep: Chic and traditional Asmita: My style is very individualistic. I am a lover of natural fabrics and traditional crafts like Ajrakh, Dabu, Kalamkari and Baagh prints. I shop as much from the State emporiums in Delhi's Connaught Place as directly purchasing from the artisans at Dilli Haat.

Aarti: I like comfort over style. My wardrobe is a mix of high street to high-end fashion.

Are you a brand conscious person?

Anudeep: I do like a few brands but am open to picking good stuff even if it isn’t branded.

Asmita: Today there are many good brands which promote traditional weaving and printing and so it doesn’t matter whether I pick a brand or do street shopping.
