A big anniversary and the celebration of feminine strength mark Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Christian Louboutin’s latest offering
On a balmy Saturday evening in April, an international crowd of fashion insiders and celebrities descended in Mumbai. The occasion will probably go down as a landmark in Indian fashion history. It was iconic designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s 20th-anniversary celebrations and the launch of his fourth collaboration with his close friend, the accessory designer Christian Louboutin.
The show was a visual feast of ready-to-wear silhouettes brought to life with embroideries, prints, textiles, and spice tones inspired by cultures along the historic Silk Route. Accessories included the newly-launched Marie Jane purse, a covetable East-meets-West hybrid of a bucket bag and potli in velvet or Nappa leather.
In their second interview with Bazaar, the charming pair spoke about the women they admire, creating together, and the links between sexuality and fashion.
Harper’s Bazaar: Tell us about the bag you have designed together—Marie Jane. Where does the name come from?
Christian Louboutin: The bag is named after Marie-Jeanne Pascal, the mother of my two daughters. It embodies her. She has produced the Indian film Masaan by the way.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee: She is a film director and producer and, if I may say so, one of the most beautiful women I know. There are some people who just exude radiance, like her. She is cultured and has a very strong global worldview.
