The Millennials cheat sh corporate ladder.

Succeeding In Non-Traditional Career Paths

Millennials have been called many names; entitled, tech addicts, the generation that seeks self gratification above all else... No matter what name you use, it is clear that being in this age group (born between 19822004) means that you are ready and willing to defy the norm in your upward mobility especially career-wise.

Being the largest group of professionals in the workforce, most Millennials prefer atypical career paths. They are no longer taking the slow and steady ladder-climbing career paths that other job seekers follow. Instead, they have mastered the art of job hopping. It is estimated that by age 35, about 25% of Millennials will have worked at five different jobs.

So, how do you as a millennial make it to the top while Job-hopping and still ensure you earn a high wage as you develop your career on a faster track?

1 TAKE RISKS EARLY AND OFTEN IN YOUR CAREER

Be gutsy. Understand that you are the author of your career. You alone know the narrative you want to push. You have a science course and want to get into graphic design? Why not? Break all those preconceived notions of what a career advancement looks like. Take pay cuts if you must. Go back to school for a short course. Take risks because not taking risks is risky. So what if you fail? Failing is learning.

2 FOCUS ON MAKING A BIG IMPACT ALWAYS

No, you do not have to wait for ten years for your impact to be felt in a company. Learn quickly and start making an impact as soon as you can. Be the go-to person for something. Can you build websites? Are you the only digital savvy person in the place? Go ahead and create a digital presence for you and your company. Susan Lucky Wong and Sharon Mundia are a good example with their just concluded show Our 2 cents for Capital FM.
