How is art aficionado and founder of Tasveer Gallery, ABHISHEK PODDAR, bringing his dream museum to life? VARUN RANA finds out
Across the street from Bengaluru’s famous Government Museum, and close to the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, is a significant plot of land that industrialist and patron-of-the-arts Abhishek Poddar purchased early this year. His plans: to build a museum unlike any the country has seen so far. With the ground-breaking done in March and the construction now underway, the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) is his personal project that will combine his love for the arts and his lifelong association with the art world into a 42,000 sqft magnum opus. But who is this man who has set out to build India’s most ambitious museum?
Who is Abhishek Poddar?
Among his businesses, Poddar’s Wikipedia page lists trading, tea plantations, RFID technology and production, and even the fashion and lifestyle retail store Cinnamon managed by his wife, Radhika. In the art world, he has always been something of a maverick, with an incredible run of luck and lineage.
He grew up surrounded by Raj-era landscapes, classic sculptures and fine porcelain collected by his father, Bimal. And when he approached his teenage years, he was given an annual allowance to begin his own collection— ₹ 25,000. His first acquisition, when he was just 14, was a Jatin Das drawing.
