Forty-five minutes after the “The Persistence of Memory” online exhibition opened to the public at 19:00 on Thursday, 11 March, I decide to relate it to you, my dear audience, in the very same way I experienced it. Presented by The Hour Glass, the exhibit offers an illustrated history of artisanal watchmaking from 1970 to 2020 – the five decades that have seen the mechanical watchmaking industry both plummet to the ground and rise up to reach its peak.
The Hour Glass boasts a network of over 45 boutiques in 12 cities across the Asia Pacific region, and is known as a champion of independent watchmaking. Group Managing Director Michael Tay says, “This survey has been a project that has been fermenting for several years now and I could not have been happier with its outcome. We assembled some 150 of the finest examples of artisanal watchmaking of this period. Many of these watches were on loan from important private collections as well as from the artisans themselves.”
