CHUB are probably one of the most obliging fish in our rivers! A last-minute chub or two has saved many a blank session, but catching very big chub is a different kettle of fish. Specimen chub have seen it all, often becoming very ‘riggy’, pulling the line off a free-spool, which pulls the rod tip around about a foot, but they still don’t get hooked!
They are really midwater feeders, with a wide mouth and a very blunt nose, enabling them to pull on a bait, or suck a bait up just in the edge of their lips, and as soon as they feel the slightest resistance, they manage to blow the bait out.
Chopping and changing flavours can trick them. They seem willing to accept a new flavour as a completely different bait, and you’ll get bites that pull the rod off the rest, but remember, they also have the ability to learn fast by association.

Making Short Work Of Specimen Chub
It takes angling guide Kenny Parsons a few hours to drive from his home, near Bath, to his favourite Wessex rivers, but it doesn’t seem to bother him, as he just loves to catch big chub on feeder and fl oat tactics, his personal best standing at 7 lb 12 oz. One of his favourite methods for this cunning species is a maggot feeder with a short hook link.
