A while ago we tested Maui Jim’s polarised reader sunglasses in two different styles and lens tints and came away suitably impressed. These particular models make use of Maui Jim’s most-advanced lens material that features optics nearly as clear as glass but much lighter, making them not only light and a pleasure to wear but also very effective in polarising. We also found their incorporated bifocals a bonus, and that they worked well for fishing as well as being stylish (see the review in TCFF 266 – Ed).
So, when Maui Jim offered us a review of one of its latest sunglasses featuring super-thin glass lenses, we eagerly accepted. Good as the newer “plastic” lenses are, as in the other models, glass lenses are hard to beat for clarity and overall performance. Glass is also mostly superior when it comes to scratch resistance, a big plus when you are out in the field with limited options for cleaning your glasses in adverse conditions. It has one major downside, however, and that is weight.
