The F2G stemmed from Pratt and Whitney’s development of the R-4360, a 28-cylinder, 3000+hp aero-engine, the idea being that the standard F4U-1 Corsair could be developed further. However, Vought were working flat out producing the F4U-1 and had no spare production capacity, so the BuAer approached Goodyear to carry out the development. They accepted the task, the result being the XF2G-1 and XF2G-2, the difference between the two marks being that the G-2 had folding wings and arrestor gear. Much has been said of this aircraft being developed as a response to kamikaze attacks, but the first airframe flew before this threat became a reality.
Of the 418 ordered, 408 were to be F2G-1s without arrestor gear or folding wings, which, if being developed to counter suicide attacks at sea, would be necessary for deployment aboard aircraft carriers. When the war ended the production order was cut to five of each variant. None ever landed on an aircraft carrier, none saw active service use, nor did they last long as development aircraft, with most having been sold into private hands by the end of 1948. These readily found use as racing aircraft, in which role they excelled. Three are still being flown in the USA.
