These symptoms have now been termed ‘breast implant illness’ (BII), a once little-known condition that has come to the fore mainly due to celebs like fitness trainer and influencer Bec Donlan, who have shared their personal experience with BII on social media. NABILA MAYET-CASSIM takes a closer look.
Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation and reconstruction carry certain risks. Although very rare, complications can occur, such as capsular contracture (tightening of the capsule of scar tissue around the implant), implant rupture – and a condition referred to as breast implant illness (BII).
BILL DEMYSTIFIED
BII is a term used by women with breast implants who self identify and describe a variety of symptoms they feel are directly connected to their saline, silicone, textured or smooth breast implants. Some of these symptoms include fatigue, chest pain, hair loss, headaches, chills, photosensitivity, rash, sleep disturbance and hormonal issues (among others) – and can appear any time after implant surgery (with some people developing them immediately, while some only seeing them years later)1. With that said, however, there is no current definitive epidemiological evidence to support a direct link between breast implants and any specific disease process2. It is also a relatively rare condition, given the number of women who have breast implants.
