Lake Okareka is approximately 9 kms from Rotorua and is different from other lakes in the district for the fact that it is surrounded by farmland in a picturesque setting of hills and native forest.
One side of the lake is wetland with a well maintained track and boardwalks. It wends its way through a marshland of raupo, rushes, toi toi, flax and a variety of native bush and there is a wide range of freshwater aquatic birds living in the lake and on the wetlands such as dabchicks, coots, pied stilt, pukeko, shags, ducks, and geese.
For those who are avid watchers there is a ‘bird hide’ in the middle of the wetland.
There are introduced species of fish in the lake such as goldfish, mosquito fish, and rainbow trout.
