Defining the boundaries of your property, a wall can also provide the perfect frame for your front garden. Offering security and privacy, front walls are ideal for houses that face the street, as they deter passersby from encroaching on your space and create distance between the pavement and your home's front windows and door.
CAN I BUILD IT MYSELF?
Depending on your DIY abilities and the material you use, you can build a wall yourself. Brick and stone walls will require concrete foundations to ensure the wall is secure. However, if you are lacking in confidence or time, there are plenty of builders who will be able to assist with the job.
Gabion walls are a versatile and cost-effective choice
DO I NEED TO GET PLANNING PERMISSION?
'Generally, planning permission is not necessary if you wish to build a new garden wall, however there are a few conditions that must be met, explains Toby Marlow, building and construction director at Haddonstone. 'For example, the wall cannot be more than two metres in height from ground level, and cannot be located on the site of a listed building. If unsure, check the government website for full details of building regulations.
WHAT MATERIALS CAN I USE?
Always begin by looking at materials used for your home itself. Your front garden wall should work in harmony with its exterior. A good tip is to survey your neighbours' front garden walls and factor in the character of your area. For example, most homes in the Cotswolds have walls crafted from Cotswold stone - a red brick wall in a sea of gold would stand out, and not in a good way.
