The IIID Design Excellence Awards 2017, supported by Anchor by Panasonic, recently concluded with a grand awards function – an occasion to celebrate design with designers, at Geoffery Bawa’s Heritance Kandalama, Sri Lanka.
On INSITE editor/colleague, Shamini’s insistence, as I sat to pen down a few lines about IIID Design Excellence Awards 2017, realisation hit me that what the team goes through, in the space of time before the finale, is much like a gestation period. Nine months from start to finish!
While for most, it might appear to be a celebration of design at exotic locations, it also involves a lot of minute planning to make it all work seamlessly and with credibility. The process is tedious, and in a nutshell involves the following:
• Meet with our partners Anchor by Panasonic, understand their expectations, spell out our wish list.
• Fine tune the categories, float online forms, announce the awards, select venues for the juries and the awards.
• Promote the awards at all events across the country, with the NEC and Chairpersons working out innovative methods to publicise and get participation in large numbers from their region.
• The Carefully select the jury, from affiliated design fields, to ensure a balanced representation for all zones.
• Compilation & categorisation of all online entries.
• Zonal jury- with a panel of 20 jury members from across the country, 5 for each of the 4 zones, with a practitioner as the jury lead.
• The much awaited open jury- project defence- to an esteemed jury for the coveted awards.
• Plan for the celebration at a design destination.
• The Grand Finale – a true celebration with Awardees, Jury and Executive Members of IIID.
• Conceive the capsule and air the awards on national television.

Smart Urban Design Statement
Imagine an abode premeditated for a family of three generations (and a probable fourth in the near future). ‘Never-Apart-ment’ is located in a dense layout of the new development engulfing the city of Hyderabad. The architects of this project Baba Sashank and Vindhya Guduru, the founders of Spaceficition Studio, masterminded the primary outcome of the concept that will be overcoming the drawbacks of a vertical settlement. The sole aim behind this ‘home-sweet-home’ was to keep the social interaction between the family members alive. The form generated is a direct consequence of this, the context and the brief.
