While famous for its stunning coastline, Croatia’s capital is becoming increasingly popular as a destination in its own right.
Things to see and do Zagreb is renowned for its laid-back, carefree atmosphere. The locals love taking time out in the numerous coffee shops and cafés, and no-one ever seems to be in too much of a hurry, a feature unique to a capital city and one that makes Zagreb ideal for a city break. The historic centre of the city is compact and easily explored on foot, where there is something worth seeing down every side street and alleyway. The Strossmayer Promenade offers some of the finest views over Zagreb and provides a romantic backdrop especially when reached by funicular.
With a mix of Austro-Hungarian architecture, socialist era high rises on the outskirts, and a dash of Mediterranean cool for good measure, Zagreb’s old town has resisted the creep of international franchises to offer a charming blend of idiosyncratic cafés, boutiques and coffee shops. Dolac Market is situated right in the heart of the city and has been offering the finest local produce since the 1930s. It is a great place to capture a feel for the locals and sample a few local delicacies.
