Verandah House, as it’s affectionately termed by Davis Architects (the firm that designed the home), is a beautiful space that enables its occupants to live in harmony with their gorgeous subtropical surroundings. A long-favored feature of Australian homes, the verandah extends the living space beyond the four walls of the property.
Situated in a small valley in Byron Bay, the home’s hallmark verandahs unify the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating opportunities to interact closely with the landscape. “The homeowners were looking to create a stylish, comfortable, and relaxed space,” explains Ed Davis, principal of Davis Architects. “They wanted a sanctuary — somewhere to chill out and retreat from the busyness of modern life.”
The design’s focus on a relaxed mélange between indoor and outdoor living is a wonderful response to this brief. The house is a graceful series of indoor and outdoor rooms, all tied together by the verandahs that run along the outside.
