Bold geometries and striking textures shape the look of this two-person abode that showcases a contemporary take on classic Peranakan architecture.
Vivid colours and quality craftsmanship aside, Peranakan tiles are well-known for their influence on the architectural trends of early 20th century Singapore. Once a common sight in the ornate interiors and striking facades of shophouses found along Singapore’s streets, these colourful decorative materials are now nostalgic reminders of a bygone era.
Making use of these exquisite tiles, designer Trifven Ho from Living Icon took advantage of their distinctive oriental motifs to create a highly interesting look for this contemporary abode, which takes a page from the design of classic Peranakan homes.
“When I started out on this project, the owners, whom I had worked with previously, specified their preference for a cheery and spacious interior,” says Trifven about the design brief that he received.
Sticking faithfully to the owners’ tastes, Trifven outfitted the 2,200-square foot space with traditional floral tiles, industrial midtones and splashes of brights to give it an eclectic visual profile that is varied yet harmonious.
