The niche that Sony carved for itself barely a decade ago, with mirrorless interchangeable lens hybrid cameras that equally enabled stills and video, is now the dominant market segment. Mukesh Srivastava, Head, Digital Imaging Head, Sony India, converses with K Madhavan Pillai, about the latest Sony cameras and his vision of the future.

The biggest factor of success for Sony is to be the pioneers of change in the digital imaging industry, and that change has been well accepted.
Q. K Madhavan Pillai (KMP): It’s been almost a year since the introduction of the path-defining Sony Alpha 1. How has the Sony Alpha 1 fared in the Indian context?

A. Mukesh Srivastava (MS): Positioned as the front runner of the Alpha series, Alpha 1 comes with a newly developed stacked CMOS image sensor and BIONZ XR image processing engine that delivers a new dimension in speed performance with highspeed, blackout-free continuous advance shooting at an unbeatable 50.1M pixels and 30fps. Moreover, it gives professional photographers and cinematographers in all fields of activity and genres, greater power of expression with the world’s first 1/400 second flash synchronisation speed, the first-ever 8K movie support of the Alpha series and high-speed communication that professionals of today require to manage their workflow.

Talking about the Indian market, the demand for Alpha 1 is majorly inclined towards wildlife, sports, fashion and wedding photography genre. The kind of response we have received from the professionals is truly phenomenal. The incredible combination of 50 MP resolution and blackout-free continuous advance shooting at 30 fps makes it a perfect choice for professionals, irrespective of their genre.

Q. KMP: As Sony’s most advanced and ambitious camera yet, what does the Sony Alpha 1 mean for Sony’s directions in the near future? Will these technologies trickle down and become available in other consumer-oriented cameras?
