Until a few months ago, Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin were fairly unknown names, discussed only in courtrooms, their celebrity confined to the local Oklahoma news. That changed when Netflix launched the wildly popular documentary Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. The series broke the platform’s previous streaming records, garnering a massive 35 million viewers within its first 10 days of release. From Joe Exotic’s signature mullet and country music to Carole Baskin’s tiger-print wardrobe and alleged black widow status—their eccentricities generated conversations, memes, and a hooked audience amid a worldwide lockdown. Soon to be turned into a motion picture starring Nicholas Cage, the Midwestern feud is also being adapted into a comic book that comes out later this month. Bazaar speaks to writer Michael Frizell about the upcoming project, animal rights, and the immense popularity of true crime stories in this age.
