After quitting the furniture business, Chairman of Sian Chay Medical Institution Toh Soon Huat devoted himself to his philosophies of life and philanthropy.
TOH SOON HUAT is constantly updating his personal Facebook account — during this 90-minute interview he pauses at least twice to tap out new statuses on his smartphone. Though he might appear to possess the social media habits of a millennial, the 57-year old is not sharing memes, selfies or #OOTDs — he’s adding to his online collection of inspirational quotes and heartfelt observations of humanity.
“We’re all of the same mind, and it’s about mercy, universal love, sacrifice and responsibility,” one of the posts reads. “So how are conflict and antagonism born?”
His role as Chairman of the 116-year-old Sian Chay Medical Institution has given him plenty of food for thought. Since assuming the position in 2008 when the second-oldest charity clinic in Singapore (after Thong Chai Medical Institution) was on the verge of shuttering, Toh has overseen the organisation’s expansion to 13 clinics island wide, which charge nothing for consultation and a token $2 or $5 for a day’s prescription of medicine or herbs, and offer heavily subsidised acupuncture and tuina treatments. The network sees more than 1,000 patients a day.
