The art of the split-shot photograph.
An over-under photograph is a magical thing it can take the viewer into another world.
Some basic equipment you are going to need is an extreme wide angle or fisheye lens, a housing with a good sized dome port (use the biggest one you have) and underwater illumination such as a strobe or two is a great advantage.
Shoot Wide Angle
A wide angle lens is preferable in most cases for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it has a large field of view and so can take in huge dramatic skies and the reef below simultaneously. A lot of over-under images are landscape photographs to some degree and it’s the photographer’s desire to record the entire vista.
Wide angle lenses also maximise depth of field. If you want the “under” and “over” elements in sharp focus then this is important, especially as focal distance underwater is closer than it is in air, so front-to-back distance is exaggerated.
