India and Indonesia have a lot in common. How do you plan to leverage these similarities to promote tourism?
I strongly believe that India and Indonesia are civilisation siblings. We share a common history, culture and tradition—our stories are intertwined. I see Indonesia as an extension of India. And the people of Indonesia love everything Indian, including Bollywood! So India is close to their hearts, and it’s only natural that we seek to improve relations and promote tourism, as it will benefit both countries. We’re focussing on better connectivity and more destinations for Indian tourists to discover.
With the launch of direct flights from Mumbai to Jakarta, do you see a further increase in tourism from India?
Connectivity is absolutely essential to promoting tourism. The direct flight between Mumbai and Jakarta, thrice a week, will generate more interest in Indonesia. This is a good start and it will encourage more people from both countries to travel. The number of Indian tourists to Indonesia was 336,765 in November 2016 and that figure may increase as new routes and connections are on the anvil.
How many foreign tourists are you expecting in Indonesia?
