Emmy Award-winning actress Laura Dern talks about the rise of women in Hollywood, being a protective mom, and the upcoming season of Big Little Lies
Laura Dern, 52, has spent practically her entire life in film. The daughter of actors Bruce Dern (The Cowboys) and Diane Ladd (Chinatown), she launched her career at the age of 13, starring opposite Oscar winner Jodie Foster in Foxes before her role in Jurassic Park turned her into a mainstream star. After focusing on several indie projects, Laura is in the midst of a career renaissance as her striking turn in HBO’s Big Little Lies earned her a coveted Primetime Emmy Award. She’s looking forward to season two of the critically acclaimed series, which is part of a wave of female-driven projects that are changing Hollywood’s creative landscape. In her latest film role, Laura plays Liam Neeson’s wife in the action drama Cold Pursuit. She lives in Los Angeles with her two teenage children.
I’m thrilled to be working on a series that’s about powerful and complicated women.
The characters in Big Little Lies are searching to be stronger for themselves and their families, they’re women with longings. Exploring those themes was amazing, but to be doing it with a group of people I now consider family is off-the-charts fantastic.
These women are not defined by the men in their lives. A series like Big Little Lies helps to break common stereotypes – these are characters that both men and women can relate to. Renata, Celeste, Madeline, they’re not perfect, they‘re real, and seeing them interact with one another and with the men in their lives isn’t always pleasant, but that’s life, isn’t it?
