Kohli Needs to Cool It

If Ravindra Jadeja is the toast of the town, Virat Kohli seems anointed as imminent heir to the throne after Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the Indian cricket captain. It is a position of both, privilege and power. While each skipper brings his own beat, the resounding sound should emanate as one. While Kohli’s talent was never in question, his temperament in a leadership role may still have a few paces yet to gain.

In many ways, Virat Kohli is an enigma. On the one hand, he has entrenched himself in Indian cricket as a big gun amongst young hands. Yet on the other hand, he has the makings of being Indian cricket's Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. One may think it is taking the analogy too far. However, in the context of where Kohli stands in what could be yet another turning point in the history of Indian cricket, it must be given due relevance.

His behaviour has often been a topic of major discussion and it has also raised several skeptical questions about the authenticity of being considered as Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s successor to the most coveted role in Indian sport. The conundrum that is presented is whether Kohli should be pressed to go against the very aggressive style that has made him a force to be reckoned with or whether he must curb his own free rein now that he has the opportunity, the potential and the very real possibility of playing an even greater role in perhaps the very near future.
