Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic Drawcard Meghan Maclaren on Taking It to the Men in Jordan, the Health of the Women’s Game, Her Father’s Influence, Tiger’s Masters Magic and How She’ll Tackle the Faldo Course Under Lights. With Kent Gray
ANYTIME THAT GOLF TRIES TO INNOVATE IT CREATES A BIT OF A BUZZ which I think is exactly what it needs. Hopefully, the Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic means a few more people will be paying attention just to see something different happening and the idea of playing under floodlights is pretty cool. I’ve always enjoyed going to watch evening football matches more than ones in the day so hopefully golf will be the same.
I’VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO PLAY THE [SUPERSEDED] DUBAI LADIES CLASSIC TWICE and it was one of my favourites, like a lot of players. I haven’t played the Faldo course enough so it will be a new experience, but obviously the environment of the venue will still be there, which is cool. It’s a pretty quick turnaround for us coming from the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco so I’ll be trying to take in as much of the course demands as possible on a Tuesday.
I DID A BIT OF PRACTICE OUT AT YAS LINKS AT THE START OF THIS YEAR and while I was there I practised once or twice under the lights, but I haven’t played at all. Even though the golf will be the same, I imagine it might affect our perception of distance and also green reading a little bit. Trusting yourself will probably be the most important thing. It’ll be a different experience for all of us but one that I think will create even more engagement which, for women’s golf in particular, is a great thing.

AMATEURS OFTEN STAND OVER THE BALL with their feet too wide apart. I understand the appeal—they want to feel more stable throughout the swing, and a wider stance seems a logical way to achieve that.
