Patterson Doing It All In Oakland

Patterson Doing It All In Oakland

In the midst of a key game against the New York Giants when he was already pulling extra duty on offense as Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper sat out, Cordarrelle Patterson approached special teams coach Brad Seely and volunteered to go back in as a gunner for the punt team.

It was a job Patterson has done all season and the coaching staff had tried to ease his workload against the Giants because of the increased reps he was getting on offense.

Patterson would have none of it and wound up making a pivotal play with a shoestring tackle on New York’s Kalif Raymond following an 8yard punt. Raymond had blocking set up for a much longer return before Patterson swooped in from behind to make the play.

“He loves ball,” Oakland head coach Jack Del Rio said. “He wants to help his teammates any way he can. We had two young guys in there that can run, but they’re green. He thought he could make an impact and he did.”

Patterson has been making plays in a variety of ways in his first season with the Raiders.

Gruden feeling the heat?

“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
