Grabban’s saved pen sees fight go to wire

SHEFFIELD Wednesday took the fight for survival to the final day, despite a lifeless display at Hillsborough.

Four points adrift of Derby County at kick-off, Owls players had slumped to the turf when the final whistle sounded, seemingly resigned to a relegation that has looked certain for months.

But Derby’s 2-1 defeat at Swansea City later in the day means the Yorkshiremen will travel to Pride Park next Saturday knowing that victory could seal a miraculous escape.

Rotherham United, level on points with Wednesday but boasting a game in hand, will also have skin in the game.

And if the Owls – who have won just one of their past six games – are to have any chance of dodging the drop then they will have to play an awful lot better than this.

Assistant Jamie Smith – deputising for Covid-hit manager Darren Moore – said afterwards that he sensed “no resignation” in the dressing room, only a sense of disappointment at three points lost. Yet the nature of the preceding 90 minutes, limp and desperately lacking urgency, suggested otherwise.
