SOUTHPORT substitute Raul Correia’slate strike rescued the Sandgrounders from an early FA Trophy exit at Northern Premier League leaders South Shields.

Jack Sampson put the visitors ahead with the only goal of the first half, but Shields bounced back after the interval.

Two goals in seven minutes from Gary Brown and Jason Gilchrist turned the game on its head.

Shields looked on course to reach the second round until Correia pounced to take the game to a replay at Haig Avenue on Tuesday.

South Shields joint-manager Lee Picton said: “I’m frustrated, but at the same time really encouraged.

“We dominated for large periods of the game and should have won it today.

“We’ll go there and be true to ourselves. If we can improve our individual quality on the ball, we’ve got a good chance.”
