THE MISSION
Create vintage portraits at home
Time needed 1-2 hours
Skill level Intermediate
Kit needed
• Kit lens
• Paper
• Tea bags
• Reflector or tin foil
• Photoshop
Vintage portraits might look old, but they never look dated. Long after Instagram filters have faded into obscurity, there will still be an appetite for that vintage look. I’m going to show you how to convert your images into convincing old film portraits. You’ll also see how to create a DIY vintage texture using little more than a piece of paper and a few tea bags. But if you don’t have the time to be dousing paper in tea, you can recreate our image with our free texture images (see web link at the bottom of page 46).
The portrait itself can be shot by a window, and if you don’t have a proper reflector you can use a roll of aluminium foil. Your photograph’s appeal will be its vintage vibe, so don’t worry if your background isn’t exciting, or if the lighting isn’t perfect.
