Shining Stars and Smiling Flowers-3 Technology: The Tool for Compassionate
Yuva Bharati|July 2020
Many a times, youth say there is no ideal in front of us; they dream and wish for the best. And while grieving or being depressed over what is not with them, they do miss so many inspiring, heart-warming, life nurturing moments in life. While grieving over the long distance between the shining stars and our self, we miss so many beautiful smiling flowers around us. These smiling flowers warm our heart and make our life fragrant. The shining stars are distant and visible only in the night but the fragrant flowers are always around. Let us stop grudging and grumbling and open our eyes to see these smiling flowers in our society. These smiling flowers are strewn liberally on each path. As a Jeevanvrati Karyakarta of Vivekananda Kendra, on my path too, I come across many beautiful smiling flowers, the inspiring, heart touching moments. This series is a garland of such blossoming, smiling flowers.

Shining Stars and Smiling Flowers-3 Technology: The Tool for Compassionate

Due to susceptibility to Glaucoma, I get my eyes checked every six months in Aravind Eye Hospital Tirunelveli. Dr Ramakrishnan the head of the hospital is expert in Glaucoma and thus the eyes are protected for last 25 years. Glaucoma can be only arrested and not cured. Hence, regular check-up is a must.

If I miss the visit, the hospital gives me a card telling when to come next. Each time I have to check the power of my eyes. However big maybe the crowd of patients waiting, I always see the staff working there giving patient, adequate time to decide whether the number is ok or not.

Every time I go, I see a bigger crowd in each department, more arrangements made for the patients to sit. Yet, the hospital is always crowded. The up gradation of technology and instruments is routinely seen in the hospital. Though it is so crowded the cleanliness is of very high order. But I have seen many such hospitals which have advanced instruments and are very posh and clean but there is something more in Aravind Eye hospital.

Vivekananda Kendra’s Rural Development project conducts regular eye camps in collaboration with Aravind Eye Hospital. Now Aravind Eye Hospital has 7-8 branches in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. Whenever I narrate to others about the care taken by the hospital for its patients, some tell me, ‘Oh naturally, for you they would be doing.’ I know as I have seen in each visit that it is not only for me but for each patient who visits the hospital, the same care is taken.

Punyabhoomi Bharatam

When I was Principal in Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya at Kanyakumari, I had made it a point to go to all the classes in a week. I used to take ‘moral science’ classes. Whatever is to be told to children to mould them and develop proper attitude and good habits in them I used to tell through stories. After experimenting with various suggested courses, I came to the conclusion that a story can be the most effective tool. So, I made my plan that in each class a specific great principle of our culture should be communicated through suitable stories.

India is a Land of Yoga

From time immemorial, India has been identified as the land of Yoga, many rishis, sages and saints in Bharat practiced Yoga and enjoyed the benefits of Yoga. They have become Yogis. Yoga is both a science and art, it has been a science of this world for physical health and of the other world for spiritual health. In between, it is the science of the psyche, intellect, willpower, and devotion. So much so India itself breathes the spirit of Yoga Geographically, it is a symbol of Yoga.

A sister and a lady with the lamp

The room in Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Sasthamangalam appears small but bears all marks of subtle nobility. There are pictures of the divine trio – Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada, and Swami Vivekananda – on the walls as well as some memorabilia and books on a bed. A frail woman in her mid-eighties sits in a corner chair, her eyes faintly lighting up as she smiles in welcome.

Swami Vivekananda And The Pandemic Panic

Epidemics and pandemics have devastated the human race throughout its existence. From prehistoric times to the present modern-days we have noticed numerous pandemics and medical emergencies. While some even turned as devastating as the fourteenth century ‘’Bubonic plague ’’ which was also known as the Black Death causing millions of human lives and is regarded as one of the most fatal pandemics in human history. Some similar conditions have evolved in the last one year and especially in last month and a two due to the Wuhan originated pandemic COVID-19 as the death toll surpasses three million mark worldwide and the arrival of a new variant or what is regarded as double mutant strain of the coronavirus has just kept the public and the governments on toes throughout the globe. However, while talking about India in particular the vaccination drive has reached close to a century but with alarming hard days, we need something which can strengthen us psychologically and emotionally too. Our search can get a halt when we come across a one hundred twenty one years old ‘Plague Manifesto’ written by the warrior sanyasi Swami Vivekananda during the Bengal Plague in 1898.
