The early experimental dives started with the use of helium gas after the effects were studied on animals and was deemed a suitable replacement for nitrogen to combat nitrogen narcosis. A lot of research went into reducing the risks of diving to an acceptable and manageable level. There was a need to also understand the physics of diving and the physiology of a diver to prevent decompression sickness.
