HOW TO DO IT

GET READY FOR RACE DAY

Racing is a hugely rewarding hobby, but it can also be intimidating, whether you're new to it or have been racing for years. If you've ever felt overwhelmed-by the training, racing strategies, etiquette, or simply the pressure—former pro road cyclist, gravel privateer, and longtime cycling coach Janel Spilker has some words of wisdom to get you racing safely and confidently.

KNOW THE ROUTE, BE PATIENT // This is even more important in single-lap races. Avoid missing poorly marked turns by loading the route into your bike computer or taping a cue sheet to your handlebar. “There could be moves that happen in the first couple laps, but statistically speaking, they aren't moves that stick,” Spilker says. Unless you're feeling good and want to practice chasing, stay in the main pack for the first half and observe everyone else. Also, check the course's elevation.

FOCUS ON SKILLS // Criteriums involve corner after corner of tight turns and often end in sprint finishes. “Practice cornering ahead of time," Spilker says. Practice by yourself, especially at higher speeds, but also with a group so you know how it feels to have people on both sides of you. Avoid braking into corners, since that's where most separations happen-and where energy is wasted.

CARRY THE RIGHT SUPPLIES // Racing on gravel means there's potential for flats (yes, multiple). Always have a good multitool as well as spare tubes, patches, CO2 cartridges, a minipump, and tire plugs if you're running tubeless. Make sure you have plenty of snacks and water, too. Know what to expect at aid stations, and remember that 20 miles of gravel will take longer than 20 miles of smooth road, so pack accordingly.

GIVE YOUR BIKE THE LOVE IT DESERVES

IT WASN'T THE FIRST OR THE LAST TIME A BIKE left me stranded. At this point in my life, it's not about having \"the legs\" or endurance to sustain a ride, event, or race-but rather a transparent awareness of accepting what I have and who I am.

BACK WHEN I WAS AN EDITOR AT BICYCLING MAGAZINE, IN the 2010s, I covered the walls of my office with bike jerseys: one each from the many teams I'd raced for, a bunch from different events, and a few collectible ones from bygone races that I'd been gifted or I had thrifted.
