Great Salt Lake Nationals
PULL Magazine|August 2019

Stop No. 17 on the USA BMX National circuit was the one and only doubled-up weekend of the year, with most West Coasters heading to Rad Canyon BMX in South Jordan, Utah, for some hot racing action in cold weather.

Great Salt Lake Nationals
You: It’s going to be 65° at Rad Canyon? Them: Wait, What?! Me: Balderdash! Many people didn’t take heed to the weatherman’s warnings as Salt Lake City is usually well into the 90’s during the Great Salt Lake Nationals, but this time around, mother nature pulled a fast one on us all. It was COLD! Besides the mad dash to grab sweatshirts on Friday, the hundreds of racers and their family and teammates were refreshed, for a change, with the chilly temps.

With this being the last GoPRO Pro Series event before the UCI World Championships, we were expecting the pro turnout to be lighter than normal ...and that it was, with 11 men on Friday and 10 for Day-two.

Daylight’s former World Champ Corben Sharrah would dominate the small field for his third and fourth wins of 2019. Again, the Pro pattern of doubles continues for this season, as we’ve had a single Elite Mens winner every single weekend. In another Alise-less class of Elite Women, Full Tilt’s Ashley Verhagen would also win both days, narrowly edging out Remix’s Rachael Mydock on day two. It was also great to see Haro’s Brooke Crain back in the mix and on the podium. She had recently quelled rumors by tweeting that she’s been injured this year but is not retiring, and that she’s still got her eyes on the prize - of making the 2020 U.S. Olympic team. On Saturday, Throdwn’s Dani George (another Olympic hopeful) snagged the third rung of the womens podium.

If there is one good thing about this year’s Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.

With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
