PULL: Congratulations Alex on your National #1 Pro title! You’re not a stranger to a Championship title, having won Amateur #1 twice already. How does it feel to move up the ranks of winning the coveted title as a Pro?

ALEX: Thanks, winning the Canadian National Pro Title last year (2017) was a really cool experience. I had a lot of fun racing the races throughout that series. The Pro-class in Canada has really been growing over the past years and we are all friends at the end of the day, which makes these races a lot of fun as well.

PULL: You’ve been riding pro now for a couple years. From riding Jr Elite to Elite on the World Cup Circuit and AA Pro on the BMX Canada/USABMX National Series. How has the transition been for you in terms of competition, racing mentality, and preparedness?

ALEX: I turned Pro when I was 16, crazy to think that was almost four years ago now. But yes, it was (still is) a big transition. It is easy to get tangled up in the concept of being pro, and all that comes along with that. Competition is always high, which means you have to show up race day with your head on straight, and trust the fact that you did your best to prepare. I’ve learnt that while it is more serious racing, I need to remember the basics and why I started racing; to have fun.

PULL: Having ridden many different races in all the various series you’ve competed in, what was your most memorable event? What about your favourite track?

If there is one good thing about this year’s Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.

With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
