When we’d last seen the Chesapeake BMX track, it was a tad muddy and rutted after three days of rainy racing at last year’s Gold Cup Finals.
So here we were again, eight months later, at one of Maryland’s most legendary tracks, and things couldn’t have been better. Chesapeake BMX was back in tip-top shape with six fresh layers of SoilTac(R) and a Lance Maguire re-build. TO’s Charlie, Tom and their relentless crew of volunteers - were ready for another great national event.
This was a double-header weekend; with half of the USA BMX staffers and West Coast riders hitting up Salt Lake City, Utah, while many of the Mid-Westerners and right-coast crew had converged on the Land of BWI, CIA, NSA and BMX. The BaltimoreWashington airport is like 10 minutes away from Chesapeake, and supposedly, CIA and NSA HQ’s are also within close proximity. Then there’s BMX - our favorite three-letter acronym for radness. Located in a plush park setting, with a diet-ending snack bar and super smooth and fun track, it’s easy to see why many families chose Maryland. The Throdwn posse and Factory Yess squad were present and accounted for, a few Blackcrown and J&R rippers made it up, as did the Blot-Out bunch. The wrecking crew from New York - AllTow-Yess, made it to Maryland, along with local team heroes TNT and C-YAA Racing. Oh, and don’t ever count out the pedal pushers in pink - Powers Bike Shop! You could tell from practice that this was going to be one heck’uva race.

GOLD CUP NORTH CENTRAL
If there is one good thing about this year’s Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

GOLD CUP SOUTHEAST
This year the DK Bicycles Gold Cup South East Finals were held at one of the fastest BMX tracks in Alabama - Circle City BMX, in Dothan. If trying to claim one of the coveted Gold Cup Plates brought you to Circle City BMX for your first time you might have been surprised when you first saw the track layout.
GOLD CUP SOUTHWEST
When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.
GOLD CUP NORTHEAST
With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
