Standard deviation (or luck) can play a big part in whether a bettor is successful or not in the short term. I was certainly reminded of that sobering fact again recently.
Going into the Ladbroke Trophy meeting at Newbury in November, despite a run of good results previously, my confidence was at a low ebb. Prior to my one bet on the Saturday, my previous four strong wagers had seen my bets unseat his rider, break a blood vessel, pulled up after almost being brought to a standstill by a faller and beaten in a photo!
All these incidents are part and parcel of the game and over a course of a year or so will probably happen to most regular bettors. The problem arises when they all happen in quick succession, it certainly tests your resolve.
NEWBURY, SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28TH
So, with my confidence shaken, but belief in my methods fully intact, I got stuck into the excellent Newbury card.
