As part of an occasional feature, Andy Greeves takes at a look back at a match in which a substitute has made a real impact for us. Today, he remembers a goal-scoring contribution from Glenn Hoddle against Coventry City in September 1978.

Club legend Glenn Hoddle made 490 competitive first team appearances for us between 1975 and 1987, and just 12 of those came as a substitute.

Among them was his first game in our colours when he came off the bench to make his professional debut, replacing Cyril Knowles in our 2-2 draw with Norwich City at White Hart Lane on 30 August, 1975 before starting in his next 99 matches for us.

Hoddle’s next substitute appearance came during our First Division match against Coventry City at the Lane on 30 September, 1978, having missed our previous three fixtures that season. Jimmy Holmes took to the pitch that afternoon wearing the number four shirt that was synonymous with Hoddle for much of his early Spurs career while Ossie Ardiles started his ninth consecutive match for us during his debut campaign in N17.
