What the compact MPV lacks in size, it more than makes up for in practicality and adaptability.

SMALL and VERSATILE

Multi-purpose Vehicles (MPV) are sometimes referred to as minivans. The somewhat unflattering moniker may have something to do with their box-like appearance that resembles, well, vans. For those who prefer more space and versatility, but who do not actually need a full-sized MPV, a compact version may be a more feasible option.

A compact MPV pretty much accomplishes what its bigger sibling is meant to do, minus some of that bulkiness and heftwith a shorter overhang and lower roofline, but still packing in loads of practicality. Some even offer seven seats across three rows. The best part is that many compact MPVs drive and handle less like a van and more like a car.

If a compact MPV is beginning to sound like the one-size-fits-all of cars, it is. Here are three models that offer the best of many worlds.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is testimony that it is possible for a car to be family-oriented, while striking just the right balance between stylishness, practicality, comfort and driving experience.

The longer wheelbase coupled with short overhangs and a lowered roofline give the B-Class a sleek proportion. Like its hatchback sibling, the A-Class, the interior looks avant-garde with aviation-inspired air vents. The optional Energizing seat kinetics take occupant well-being to a whole new level with orthopaedically- beneficial seat adjustments and the use of algorithms that make recommendations based on stress levels.
